I rode my bicycle on a warm early afternoon one April to meet a friend with whom I’d shared a platonic day in the park the previous fall: skipping rocks and laying in tall grass. We don’t see each other often and the tension we feel when we do has never amounted to so much as a kiss. But riding my bike down hill heading home with the butterflies that can bring, I challenged myself to daydream; imagining what it would be like if we explored another level of lush, romantic intimacy and pleasure without fear of consequence; without need for more. It’s the realization of one’s own guardedness and healing through freedom that is sometimes only accessible through fantasy.
